Feedback

After presenting my ideas to my peers, I received some beneficial feedback for my magazine cover. Firstly, with announcing my possible mastheads either being “GLITTER” or “GOLD” I asked my peers to vote for their favoured title, as majority had voted for Gold, I am now certain that I will be naming my magazine Gold, as much as I appreciate my peers’ opinions this choice was my favourite also as it is short and applies to the conventions of my magazine and also as the colour gold is connoted with quality, prestige, sophistication, value and elegance I thought it would be appropriate for my magazine. Additionally, I also illustrated some font styles that I considered for the masthead, and again I am going to go for the one that was most voted for, it is again simple and sophisticated.

Furthermore, I thought of 4 possible colour schemes I could use for my magazine and out of the four possibilities my audience voted for 2 which were black – royal blue – gold and silver – royal blue – black. I think I will be going for the first set as the colours relate to the tittle of my magazine and also the outfit of my cover star therefore I believe it would be most appropriate for my magazine in order to create consistency.

I came up with 3 different layouts for my magazine cover, and presented into my peers they did have their opinions about my layout however, I'm not exactly sure whether or not I would keep to any of these themes as I'm not particularly pleased with them.

Moreover, as I have stated in my presentation I am thinking to target my magazine mainly at women with a wide age gap of  roughly 16 - 40 however, it will be featuring male artist to therefore it will be available for both genders under their wish. I intended to price my magazine around £3.50 - £5.00 perhaps £4.50 as I intend to create an elite magazine though the theme will be hip hop/ pop genre which will be found online and in news agents also available to order.
I will use Denis distributor to distribute my magazine as they are well known and have a good reputation.

I took 2 sets of shoots for my magazine as I was sure which outfit to use as different outfits symbolise different meanings. This was good for me as it gave me a wide range of photos to choose from!

Beginning of Magazine cover editorial

I began to edit my magazine cover image, I wanted to remove the background as the colour white allows the image to stand out more and in the future i want to have the masthead behind my cover star and this way it would be a lot easier to do so. Furthermore, I smoothened the skin do give a more clear and better look.

After the photoshoot

This is the first outfit I chose for my model, I wanted a glamorous look. I think for now I will be going for one of thesepicture as my magazine cover.
Furthermore, I then told my model to go for an outfit change in order to give a more chic look, I was very happy with the outcome however, for now it seems as though I will use the first set of images.

Studio

We were introduced to the studio in order to take successful shoots for the magazine we will be creating.

I was introduced to many different features that I wasn't exposed to before, therefore this session was extremely valuable and useful for me.

I chose to use a white backdrop, additional to this I was taught how to set the lights up for example setting it to 1 was the lowest and 6 was the highest. Also, more features such as point light key lights creating shadow, fill lights which takes away the shadows and soft boxes and Godox which links the lights.

Furthermore I was also taught that 3:1 lights every light will do something different

The camera I was taught to you use was the NIKON D7000 which is 17,000,000 megapixel which will allow me to take pictures up to a high quality and standard.

One thing I particularly liked was the gold and silver panels which allowed me to give a glimpse of gold on the skin and silver which contoured.

Research Task - Magazine Newsstand Task

As a part of the research task, in class, as preparation for our own music magazines, we were instructed to find newsstands which had music magazines. Therefore, I had to go out and find a newsagent which sold Magazines. As a result to this, I was instructed to visually analyse the distribution of magazines and how they are presented to the public. The newsagent that I chose offered a wide variety of magazines which was useful for me as this way I was able to see how so many magazines were displayed and presented to the target market. After taking a close look at the presentation of the music magazines on the newsstands, the first thing that came to my attention is that the masthead of all the magazines were visible. This is deliberate in order to allow the customers to find the magazine they are looking for easily and also this way the magazines are promoted and increases the sample of buyers. Furthermore, the skyline is visible with the majority of the magazines. The skyline gives an insight to the genre of the music magazine. For example, Mixmag's skyline is "the world's biggest dance music & club culture magazine" Which is in fact one of my choices for my key studies. From this, we can see that Mixmag is a magazine that is involved in club culture and dance, letting us know the genre of the magazine.

Publishers are the institutions that produce the magazine. The publishers will control the editorial content and design of the magazine, as well as managing relationships with advertisers. Circulation figures help publishers to plan how many issues to produce and distribute. Furthermore, which publisher uses a network of distributors, who manage the flow of magazines from the printer to the final newsstand, where the magazine is sold. Regular readers of magazines, may wish to subscribe to a number of issues, and have the magazine regularly posted to them, usually at a discounted price. Magazines can also be distributed by ezines which are electronic versions of magazines, which pages can be turned over etc. Additionally, as everyone in the modern world is centred around their phones, many magazines now have smartphone or iPad apps with some content available.

College Magazine Final

Front Cove
Contents Page
Evaluation

In the introductory task, we were trained to create a college magazines using programs such as In Design and Photoshop, further to this, I also used my prior knowledge of magazine features and layouts to create my cover and contents page which had similar features to what would be found in a real magazine, for instance, a masthead, subheadings, cover line and so on. I am relatively pleased with the piece I have produced and I genuinely believe the magazine cover and content page I have produced is up to a decent quality and superiority.

In order to make my magazine cover appealing and attractive I used various fonts, colours and sizes which allowed my magazine to be engaging. However, I did keep to a certain colour scheme, being orange, black and yellow in order to create consistency with in my work. Also, the choice of colour scheme applies to the release date of the magazine as it is published in autumn term it reflects to the colours connoting with autumn. The medium close up of a student illustrates the theme of the magazine (college magazine), for example as the image is the main focus of the cover, the cover star, the cover star is the most attractive aspect of the cover so it would attract the reader if they knew the cover star, it is important that the audience understand the theme of the magazine at first glance, I made sure that the photo I took was a medium close up to keep to the conventions of a existent magazines. Furthermore, the cover star is looking directly at the camera, showing eye-contact and makes it look as if she speaking to the audience which creates direct address with the audience.

Additionally, the student looks enthusiastic about education as in the image she is holding her folders like she is ready to learn this indicates that she is keen in learning and that college is a fun place which will influence other students. Moreover, the fact that the students ID card is visible once again highlights the theme of the magazine and clearly illustrates that she is a present student. I used a plain background for my image as the main focus is the student on the cover this way the magazine illustrates it focus clearly.

In order to create the magazine, I used numerous tools in Photoshop which has enhanced my editorial skills. As I am newly introduced to Photoshop and InDesign, I believe I have made a good job in using different tools on both of the programmes, at first I found it difficult however the more I used it the easier it became for me. I used formal text on my magazine cover as the magazine is for school purposes it should be giving formal and helpful information for students to benefit from. I also provided the end user with valuable information about further education which can influence students to go on to further education and become successful, which is one of the aims of the magazine. Additionally, I have also used a quote by Benjamin Franklin, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember” which I can relate to and I believe the majority of students can relate to therefore I believe it’ll be beneficial information for them and their teachers in lessons, it also makes them question whether they are actually learning or just in the lesson because they have to be there.

After the completion of my magazine, I received quite pleasing and helpful feedback.

“Your college cover page is great as you used vibrant colours which is very appealing to the audience as this would tempt the audience to buy this type of magazine on the shelf also the fact that the information you have given is very straightforward and understandable.
Overall, well done!”  - I agree with the comment received , I also believe that the information I provided was straightforward this was my aim so that students that are unsure about college education can gain a clear and detailed information in order for them to make a right step in to college.

“Dilara, you have a simple, complex, naturalistic magazine cover. You have used orange, which suits the background of the student to make it seem like she is a studious. Furthermore, the magazine cover is really appealing which would grab the attention of the audience, along with the texts that make it seem entertaining. Lovely magazine cover, well done.” Although Complex is the antonym of simple, I agree with the matching colour scheme i.e. background colour and the text used with the cover and contents page. I also agree with the entertaining aspect as the cover star looks entirely happy which influences the students to purchase the magazine.

“The use of orange and black colour scheme really makes the image stand out also the yellow masthead catches attention also the content page has kept the same scheme however more tag lines could be used and a lighter colour scheme to make it for appealing for students.” I approve of the masthead standing out as yellow is an alarming colour which grabs the attention of the end user and the masthead is the most important feature on the magazine due to buyers finding the magazine reliable and constant buyers would be able to find the magazine easily. Furthermore, I agree with my peer that I could have used  more tag lines and perhaps a lighter background for my contents page however as I wanted to keep to a certain colour scheme I chose to use the colour black which is simple and creates sophistication within my work.

College Magazine Beginning

Further to yesterdays college photo-shoot session, today I began creating my magazine article's front page. I began by choosing a picture from the pictures that I had took previously and used the one above as I thought this was most convenient. After placing the image, I coloured the background image to a similar tone to the original background colour in order to make the background fair as due to the flash used whilst taking the image there were some issues with the fairness of the background colour. I then used a tool to smoothen the outlines of the model used so that the picture stands out. Next, I went on the using the smoothing tool to smoothen the models face.
Furthermore, to give a realistic look to the magazine, I found a barcode online and placed it on the image. For now, I used a basic bold yellow tittle "College" however, later on I may change this.

Pictures For College Magazine

Today I went and found my self a model for my college magazine, I took several of pictures for both my magazine cover and contents page. We went to various different areas of the college to give a taste of a daily student life at a college, being in the library, reading a book, revising etc.

College Magazine Plan

Today I planned my college magazine layout, this is a rough draft. I may or may not keep to this layout. The colour scheme is also a rough choice. I don't think I will be keeping to my plan, however making a plan has helped me understand how a magazine will be created.

College Magazine Analysis

Trial of Photoshop

Today I was introduced to Photoshop for the first time, so we had a trial run. I picked my favourite celebrity "KIM KARDASHIAN" as a front cover I used various different skills and tools in order to make a magazine. I began by creating a first layer, which was used to create the background I chose to use gradient background (white to grey) However I then changed it hence the picture that I chose was blending in with the picture therefore, I came to a decision of making background colour burgundy as this way the picture would stand out and create a contrast with the background, I specially chose a tone of red, since this colour connotes with love, passion and seductiveness as all these traits reflect to Kim's character. Additionally, I cropped out the background of the image in order to draw more attention to the picture itself. I started off with using a tittle, however later I removed it since I couldn't find an appropriate tittle to relate to the image.

After using Photoshop today, I feel more confident and familiar with the programme and believe that it has helped me gain an understanding of the programme which will help me in the upcoming weeks with my college and music magazine.

Questionnaire and feedback received

Finished article

In this assignment we had to undertake research in to the music industry and look at illegal downloading. I took out a research online to find information on the benefits and drawbacks of illegal downloading. These results gave me an in depth understanding on illegal downloading. In conclusion to this, I believe that there is both benefits and drawbacks for the artist i.e. promotion and on the other hand the artist does not get credited for his/her music. However, the audience appear to be in favour of illegal downloading as it provides them easy, quick and free music.

Furthermore, I then went on to emerging all the results I had gathered in creating a journalistic writing task, I included the strengths and weaknesses of illegal downloading also, I used further researching skills to gather factual and evidential information. For example, after reading into this topic, I found that a lot of different artists had varied opinions on this issue, I included their personal opinions I used artists such as Jessie J, Sean Paul and John Newman. As I had set my target audience as adults I used a formal language throughout the article.

Additionally, I included statistical facts to raise awareness on this issue as it appeared to create a huge problem for the music industry.

Moreover, I was then introduced to InDesign at first I found this programme  quite intense and difficult as I had not previously used it, however with the help and commands of my teachers I was easily able to use it. I created a double page article and split it into two as I believed it would create a more professional look in that I could use one side to illustrate this issue so that the audience would be intrigued soon as they see the image.

After searching for varies images, I came to an agreement that I should use Jessie J as she was the most compelling artist I included in the article with her quote taking a huge space on top of the image, I thought this would create an immediate interest for the audience as she had a negative approach to this issue. I used clear, block, big letters as a tittle as this was a way to put forth the main idea of the text.

I used the colour red for the tittle as this is an alarming colour which can suggest that this is an alarming issue and that something should take place instantly to resolve this issue. On the right side of the page, I included the article that I had typed up previously, I used two columns to give it a professional magazine look.

On the centre of the page, I used an image of a treble clef so that soon as the audience turn over to the page they know its a music related article. I used a basic colour scheme of black, white and red ass I believe simplicity is sophistication which again is appropriate for my target audience.

After the completion of my article, I made and distributed a questionnaire in order to gain a clear feedback of my article, with this I was able to see the clear strengths and weaknesses of my magazine.
